The spinning wheel used by Mahatma Gandhi to make Khadi was called Charkha. Gandhiji used to whirl Charkha in his Ashram daily in the morning and evening. He generated Khadi from his charkha of which he made Khadi clothes for himself and people living with him in the ashram.
The cloth prepared by spinning and weaving in Gandhi Ashram was named Khadi, that is, Khadi is the cloth whose thread is spun and woven by hand by the artisans. In this way Gandhiji made Khadi a movement and Charkha a weapon for the freedom struggle. Gandhiji had said, “Khadi is not a cloth but an idea.” The people of the country actively participated in making Khadi through this institution and the country became self-reliant in the production of indigenous clothes.
